Summary: Decolonization
During the Cold War, colonies wanted to emerge as new independent nations. Examples of these colonies included India, Israel, Congo, Philippines, Egypt, Indonesia, Vietnam, and Afghanistan. Most of these colonies peacefully asked for their independence. Some countries became successful and stable while other colonies became unorganized. In Africa, African leaders got rid of colonial rule and created independent nations, Africa is now building stable economic and political systems. When the colonies gained their independence, it worked towards the the United States and Soviet Union advantage because they now could make sure the new nations could possibly become an ally during the Cold War.
Essential Question: What was the process of decolonization? Decolonization is when colonies want to be free and independent from their own host nation. When the host nation doesn't let them disperse from them and negotiations fail, the people of the colony come together in order to achieve their goal of independence. Violent protesting can happen within the colonies as well as public protests like marching. In the United Nations document on granting independence to colonial countries, it claims, "All armed action or repressive measures of all kinds directed against dependent peoples shall cease in order to enable them to exercise peacefully and freely their right to complete independence, and the integrity of their national territory shall be respected"(United Nations). All in all each colony had the same goal to achieve, to fight for their freedom and ultimately win their own independence.
